History of Saas-Fee

It is believed people have lived in Saas-Fee since 1300s but the more modern history takes its starting point in 1893 when the town separated from Saas-Grund (in the lower valley) and formed its own parish. It was not until 1951 when the first paved road from Saas-Grund was opened that the town started to flourish as an attractive, and accessible, destination for travelers who wanted to enjoy the unique mountain experience. As part of the agreement to have the road it was also agreed to keep the town of Saas-Fee car-free. This is still the situation today, where no cars are allowed in town, and you get around in small electrical vehicles.

Saas-Fee continues to have an active full year community with a local school and other necessary public services. Most people work in the tourist industry but many also work as farmers and craftsmen. In town you continue to see the old farm buildings/barns. Some of these are being converted into living accommodation while others are used by local farmers, either for their livestock or for drying their cheeses or meats.
